Republicans rip White House for putting tax dollars on line over possible defense layoffs – Fox News

The Obama administration is trying to bribe defense contractors to NOT warn of impending layoffs (due to possible sequestration) before the election in November. In doing so, they are offering to cover legal expenses for contractors who will hold off on notices.

The problem is that contractors are bound by the WARN Act to give 60 days notice of impending mass layoffs. AND they are going to pay those costs with tax dollars – your money and mine.

Couldn’t that be construed as using public funds for political purposes? That’s like raiding the general fund to pay for part of your political campaign, isn’t it?

If a $16 trillion debt wasn’t enough for taxpayers to lose sleep over, the Obama administration has offered to pick up the check — at taxpayer expense — for legal costs associated with defense industry layoffs should automatic Pentagon cuts be triggered.

Republicans are now crying foul over the move, accusing the White House of playing politics over the possibility of mass layoffs. At issue are the crush of Pentagon budget cuts set to go into effect starting in January should Congress fail to avert them. Under federal law, many employers are supposed to give 60-day notice of “mass layoffs” if they are considered likely, but the Obama administration for months now has urged companies not to do so.

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., also said it was “troubling that the Obama administration would openly encourage the violation of federal law and offer to pay the legal fees that resulted.”
Yet another law openly ignored and broken by this administration..

  1. not referring to men and women in uniform, but the bloated unnecessary defense contracts. . . for unneeded Abrams tanks and Joint Strike fighters that will cost many trillions over the next decade or so, that our military in the airforce and Navy has asked that we not spend money on. Oh, yeah, I saw how conservatives show they are grateful, by voting down a 1 billion dollar over 5 year funding program to put returing vets back to work. And they put up lots of flags, on your lawns and your shirts. True patriots.

  2. Republicans want us to be North Korea. One party rule – them. All government spending on defense(offense really, they love to invade) and nothing on programs for citizens. They also don’t seem to care if they offend the entire world, in fact, anyone who doesn’t go out of their way to offend other nations is considered an apologist.

To all of you, I say chill out. We have plenty of external enemies, no reason to manufacture more – unless all you care about is winning at all cost. I know you do, so carry on

Uhhh… Ooookaaayyy… And you believe this how?

      • Uh, because that is exactly what they say? I listen to their words, and observe their budget proposals. Decrease taxes while increasing spending on military, cut all funding for social programs. Don’t you read your won budget proposals?

        • rightbill says:

“Republicans want us to be North Korea.” That’s absurd.

“All government spending on defense” That’s ridiculous. There has never been a budget proposed that excludes anything not defense related.

“(offense really, they love to invade)” If that were true, we would have taken over the whole world long ago.🙂

“and nothing on programs for citizens.” Such as?

“They also don’t seem to care if they offend the entire world” Examples, please?

“in fact, anyone who doesn’t go out of their way to offend other nations” Please give examples of that, too.

“is considered an apologist.” Please define “apologist”.

“We have plenty of external enemies, no reason to manufacture more” I agree with this, however I would submit that you create and encourage many more enemies by being weak than by being strong.

“unless all you care about is winning at all cost.” If by “winning” you mean protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States of America, I would say that you hit it pretty close.

“I know you do, so carry on” We will. Many of us took an oath to do so, and we take that seriously. Unfortunately, many political leaders do not.

Unlike you liberals, we conservatives are actually greatful to the Armed Forces for the freedom we enjoy.
